New COVID-19 cases surpass 12-hundred in latest report

PIERRE, S.D. – For the first time since switching to a weekly report, the Department of Health reported more than 1,000 new cases of COVID-19 Wednesday.

Health officials listed 1,254 new cases – up 283 from last week.  The state’s total case count is now at 244,523, up from last week’s 243,269. That total does not include at-home positive results as those are not required to be reported to the state.

Active cases have also surpassed 31-hundred, as 3,101 active cases are being reported today.

Hospitalizations decreased by 12 from last week’s report to 53. Two new deaths were reported, sending the state’s death toll to 2,938.

Pennington County continues to be the hot spot – reporting the most new cases statewide with 249. That sends the active number of cases in Pennington County to 707.

Lawrence County reported 45 new cases this week and Meade County added 53.

Elsewhere, Fall River County listed 43 new cases, Custer County totaled 22, Oglala Lakota County reported 18, Butte County had 14 and Harding County added two additional new cases.
