PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Health says new cases of COVID-19 continue to increase across the state as 1,569 new cases were reported in the weekly update.
Active cases continue to rise as well as 3,857 are listed today.
Hospitalizations due to the virus have increased 23 over the week to 89 and five new deaths have been reported. Of the new deaths, one was out of Lawrence County and another was reported out of Butte County. The state’s death toll reaches 2,945.
Across the Black Hills area, Pennington County saw 276 new cases this week. Active cases have risen to 750 in western South Dakota’s most populous county.
Lawrence County added 69 new cases this week while Meade County reported 60.
Elsewhere, Butte County listed 35 new cases, Oglala Lakota County had 39, Fall River County reported 28 and there were 18 new cases out of Custer County.
As of July 13, 45 of South Dakota’s 66 counties are listed as having “high” or “substantial” community spread. “High” community spread is 100 cases or greater per 100,000 or a 10% or greater PCR test positivity rate.
