RAPID CITY, S.D. – Bringing expertise and enthusiasm to a new role, Nebraska native Erin DeHaan has been named the newest South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension Beef Specialist.

Positioned at West River Research and Extension in Rapid City, DeHaan, who will also serve as an assistant professor, is set to spearhead research efforts aimed at bolstering the beef industry in South Dakota.

Erin’s journey in the agricultural sector is deeply rooted in her upbringing in Laurel, Nebraska, where she actively participated in 4-H livestock shows.

Her academic pursuits led her back to SDSU, where she achieved her undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degrees in animal science, supplemented by her studies in agribusiness, agronomy, and meat science. Her graduate work focused on meat science and ruminant nutrition, areas she is eager to explore further in her new role.

Erin’s addition to the team is anticipated to bring a wave of innovative programming that will significantly benefit local beef producers.

Erin expressed her excitement about leveraging her expertise to support some of the nation’s finest beef producers in South Dakota. She is also looking forward to collaborating with the faculty and staff at West River Research and Extension to deliver cutting-edge research and comprehensive support to meet the evolving needs of producers and stakeholders in the industry.
