New study shows South Dakota economy 37th overall

STURGIS, S.D. – Contrary to what you hear on political ads, South Dakota does not have the best economy in the nation.

WalletHub released their latest report today on the best and worst state economies.

In order to determine America’s top economic performers, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 28 key indicators of economic performance and strength. The data set ranges from change in G.D.P. to startup activity to the share of jobs in high-tech industries.

South Dakota, according to Wallethub, ranks 37th overall – down from its last report.

The state is 42nd in terms of Economic Activity and 47th for Innovation Potential. However, it does well for Economic Health, a key indicator, where it comes in 4th.

The state’s with the best economies right now are Washington State at number one, Utah number two and California, number three. Massachusetts and New Hampshire round out the top five.

The five states with worst economies are West Virginia, Alaska, Louisiana, Hawaii and Oklahoma.

Wyoming is ranked 45th, North Dakota is 38th and Montana is 18th.
