RAPID CITY, S.D. – A South Dakota man, Darrell Goins, 42, from Newell, has been arrested on felony and misdemeanor charges, including assaulting law enforcement during the Jan. 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol. This incident disrupted a joint session of Congress convened to verify electoral votes related to the 2020 presidential election.
Goins faces six felony charges, including civil disorder, assaulting officers with a dangerous weapon, and entering a restricted building with violent conduct. Additionally, he is charged with two misdemeanor offenses related to disorderly conduct and demonstrating in a Capitol building.

The FBI arrested Goins on May 9, 2024, in South Dakota, and he appeared in court in Rapid City.
According to court documents, on Jan. 6, 2021, Goins was part of the crowd gathered on the Capitol’s West Plaza. Video footage shows him cheering with the rioters and throwing a plastic soft-drink bottle at a Capitol Police officer. He then engaged with officers while attempting to breach their lines and entered the Capitol building.
The case is prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section, with assistance from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Dakota. The FBI’s Birmingham, Minneapolis, and Washington Field Offices are investigating, with support from the U.S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department.
Over 1,424 individuals have been charged across nearly all states since Jan. 6, 2021, with over 500 facing felony charges for assaulting or impeding law enforcement. The investigation continues.
