Douglas Brian Jacobs
Douglas Brian Jacobs was born in Sioux City, Iowa on September 14, 1946. He went through school in Sioux City then went off to college at Wayne State in Nebraska. He loved sports, especially football. He was a Wayne State Wildcat and went onto play football in the Air Force for the Ramstein Rams. He was so proud of that. His love of sports led him to coaching whenever he could. He coached Pop Warner football in Arizona for many years. He also coached middle school wrestling, basketball, and city league softball. He loved teaching the kids’ sports. His favorite sport to coach were any his kids were playing.
In 1986, Doug married Laurie (Hills) Valentine. She had two girls, Tina and Stacey, from her previous marriage and Doug had a son, Jayme. Two more girls, Breanna, and Deborah joined the family, so it was a Yours, Mine, and Ours family.
The family moved from Arizona to Sturgis, SD, in 1991 for his job at Fort Meade as a veteran’s benefits counselor. Doug volunteered to coach football at SBHS. He was thrilled when he was later asked if he would like to be a paid coach for SWMS. He also spent summers coaching youth softball.
Even more than sports, Doug loved his family. Grand babies could make him smile no matter how he was feeling. He really loved the babies.
Doug never complained when Parkinson’s was getting the best of him. He kept competing in Senior Games up until 2019. He was an inspiration to many.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Laurie; son, Jayme (Beny); daughters, Tina (Larry), Stacey (Jason), Breanna, and Deborah; as well as 14 grandchildren; 4 great- grandchildren with one more on the way; his brothers, Jack, Tim (Vicky), Tom (Deanna), Randy, Perry (Caroline); sister, Jennifer (Rob); and many nieces and nephews.
On November 17, 2021, Doug joined the Heavenly Father; his parents; brother, Jim; and two nephews.
Until we see you again, we love you and miss you!
