Earthquake activity on the rise in South Dakota

PENNINGTON COUNTY, S.D. — A 2.6 magnitude earthquake was reported about nine miles north-northeast of Quinn in Pennington County early Wednesday morning.

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the quake around 5:28 a.m. Mountain Time. The Quinn area historically experiences earthquake activity significantly above the overall average in the U.S.

It’s the fifth earthquake reported this year in South Dakota. Two earthquakes were reported last year in the state.

During the past 30 days, South Dakota was shaken by two quakes of magnitude 3.0 or above and 1 quake of magnitude 2.6.

Before the June 15 event, the United States Geological Survey reported a 3.7 magnitude quake at 10:25 a.m., just north of the South Dakota border with Nebraska on June 4.  The center of the earthquake was about 11 miles southeast of Fairfax. The agency says the earthquake occurred in a relatively sparsely populated region. About 12,000 people were exposed to “light shaking.”
