Governor, fitness icon help Sturgis Williams Middle School cut ribbon on new fitness center

STURGIS, S.D. — Earlier this spring, Governor Kristi Noem and fitness icon Jake “Body by Jake” Steinfeld announced three West River schools as winners of the Don’t Quit! Fitness Center Campaign.

The campaign awarded Custer Elementary School, Newell School and Sturgis Williams Middle School $300,000 dollars in fitness equipment.

Today (Wednesday), Sturgis held the ribbon cutting for their brand new fitness room.

Jake Steinfeld and Governor Kristi Noem were both on hand to encourage the kids to stay active and healthy by utilizing the equipment.

Physical Education Teacher Kristi Cammack helped the kids put together the video that won them the $100,000.

“We are so exicted for all of the kids that’s going to benefit from the use of this equipment, and we can’t wait to use it,” Cammack told KBHB Radio News as 5th through 8th graders already jumped onto the machines to begin working out.

Governor Kristi Noem and Jake Steinfeld help a Sturgis Williams Middle School student work out on the new fitness machines.

Governor Noem says exercising builds both physical and mental strength wants South Dakota to be a leader in teaching kids the building blocks to health and wellness.

“Exercising builds both physical and mental strength. We want South Dakota to be a leader in teaching kids the building blocks to health and wellness throughout their lives,” said Governor Noem. “There were so many great applications that really showed how South Dakota schools are making fitness a priority. And thank you to Jake Steinfeld and the National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils for their generous support of our students, their families, and our schools.”

Steinfeld, who chairs the National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils (NFGFC), reached out to Governor Noem earlier this year about a public-private partnership to provide the fitness center equipment free of charge through the DON’T QUIT! Fitness Campaign.
