Western South Dakota's Only Ranch Station

Harry Edwin Strong

Harry Edwin Strong, 69, Sturgis, SD, died Friday, May 26, 2023, at Monument Health Hospice House, Rapid City, SD.

Harry Edwin Strong was born on January 24, 1954, to Everett and Joyce (Deering) Strong in Union Center, SD. He spent his childhood growing up on the very ranch in Union Center homesteaded by his grandmother, Anna Strong, in the early 1900’s.

Harry spent his childhood in and around ranch life, among his several brothers and sisters that spent their summers doing chores on the ranch, fishing the stock ponds, and corralling chickens or horses. It was during his childhood Harry developed a love of horses, culminating in owning his Spanish Mustang Cloud and spending fond years in a saddle.

Harry graduated from Sturgis High School in 1972, later receiving an Electrical Trade degree from Western Dakota Tech in Rapid City. He’d put that degree to great use over many years and several states. He made stops in Wisconsin to work and ride horse on a dairy farm, construction work across the State of South Dakota, and finally retired from the hotel maintenance industry after more than a decade working in the City of Deadwood for several hotels and properties.

Harry was quite fond of his hobbies too. Other than his work with horses, he also spent a great deal of time with his best friend, fishing every stock pond and small lake the Black Hills had to offer. He was an exceptional Cribbage player and took great pride in having taught a few of his nieces and nephews the ins and outs of ‘Double Runs’ and ‘Nobs’. In April of 2008, he became a proud member of the Scottish Rite of Masonry, where he sought to spread wisdom and care to the community around him.

He was proceeded in death by his mother, Joyce (Deering) Strong and his father, Everett Strong, and three siblings; Sharon Lavonne, Mary Eileen Strong, and Donald Mark Strong.

He is survived by his brothers, Jim (Barbie) Strong of San Diego, CA, Mike (Lori) Strong of Rapid City, SD, Dennis (Tracey) Strong of Cheyenne, WY; his sisters, Susan (Richard) Braun of Granton, WI, and Kathryn (Jim) Waggoner of Rapid City, SD. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, who cherished their visits to his little house in Sturgis.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 31, 2023, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., Kinkade Funeral Chapel, Sturgis, SD. Graveside services will be Thursday, June 1st, 10:30 a.m. at Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Monument Health Hospice House.
