Investigation into cause of fire that heavily damaged Sturgis church underway

STURGIS, S.D. – Fire investigators will be combing through the rubble of the Believer’s Fellowship Church to try and find the cause of the fire that heavily damaged the structure over the weekend.

Crews from Sturgis, Ft Meade and Whitewood were called to the scene early Saturday morning, where they found active fire spreading the building’s attic and roof.

The fire took out the building’s roof, although walls of the structure remained standing.

In a social media post, Believer’s Fellowship announced the fire had destroyed their roof and there was a lot of water damage.

Sturgis Fire Chief Scott Lensegrav says the wind driven fire kept them busy for several hours. He says no injuries to firefighters were reported and no one was inside the building when the fire started.

The church is located on Old Stone Road in south Sturgis. Sturgis police helped keep patrol over the weekend to make sure no one tried to enter the building.
