KEYSTONE, S.D. – Authorities in Pennington County provided more information Tuesday on the rescue of a man from a collapsed trench Monday.
Officials say the Battle Creek Fire Department were the first to respond to the 2000 block of Nellie Lane in Pennington County for a report of a male trapped in a dirt excavation trench. The call came in at approximately 2:12 p.m.
The man was trapped up to his waist in an approximately 10-12’ dirt excavation trench, unable to free himself and immediately struck a second alarm including a call for specialized support from the Rapid City Fire Department Urban Heavy Rescue, Pennington County Search and Rescue and the Rapid City Solid Waste Division.
Firefighters and Search and Rescue personnel worked in 100-degree Fahrenheit temperatures in a very narrow and confined work site. They used specialized equipment to remove the male, which included a Rapid City Water Reclamation Division vacuum excavation truck.
Once freed from the trench, the worker was taken to Monument Hospital in Rapid City by ground ambulance. His condition was not released.
No other injuries were reported.
