Meade 46-1 School District sees slight increase in enrollment

STURGIS, S.D. – Fall enrollment within the Meade 46-1  School District is up a bit over a year ago.

A count taken on September 8th indicated 3,082 students this year – ahead of last year’s 3,073.

Superintendent Wayne Wormstadt told the Meade 46-1 School Board at their meeting this week that this count is preliminary and an official count will be taken on September 23rd. That official count will be for state purposes, who base their state aid to school districts on enrollment numbers.

For state aid purposes, each student brings the district about $6,400.

Wormstadt says enrollment at Sturgis Elementary was up a dozen students over last year and Whitewood Elementary was up seven students. Stagebarn Middle School grew by four students and Piedmont Valley Elementary saw seven additional students this year.

Seeing a drop was Sturgis Williams Middle School, where enrollment was down from last year’s 526 to 490.

The enrollment at the rural schools remained the same at 98.

Sturgis Brown High School enrollment shows an increase of 15 students going from 843 to 858.
