STURGIS, S.D. – Sturgis Police officers, Sergeant Dylan Siscoe, and Officer Beth Bachand, along with Meade County Sergeant Jon Tish were honored with a ‘Life Saving Award’ at Monday night’s council meeting.

The three were dispatched to a home on March 16 where a man was having chest pains. When they arrived, the man had no pulse.

Officers utilized their AED and administered a shock to Steven Denton. They then moved him to the floor to begin CPR. CPR was continued until the ambulance crew arrived 3 minutes after officers. The ambulance crew assumed care of the patient and utilized a LUCAS device to continue CPR. Additional shocks were delivered along with advanced drugs as they loaded Mr. Denton into the ambulance.

After the 4th shock was delivered, they were able to get a pulse. Mr. Denton was transported to the Hospital while the Ambulance crew continued to breathe for him until he regained consciousness and was able to breathe on his own.

Sturgis Ambulance Director Shawn Fisher says it shows the importance of AED’s being available at a moments notice.

Steve Denton and his wife were on hand last night to personally thank those who helped save his life.
