Wallace “Wally” Burton Kehn
Wallace “Wally” Burton Kehn, 82, passed away peacefully at his home in Sturgis, SD, after a long illness on May 31, 2021.
Wally was born on the Silver Lake homestead in Turner County, SD, on March 4, 1939, to Benjamin (Ben) and Viola (Heckel) Kehn. He grew up on a farm near Marion, SD, and went to school and graduated from the Freeman Academy. On January 22, 1965, he married Donna Earley at Flandreau, SD.
Wally worked with Sweetman Construction, Sioux Falls for many years and helped build Interstate 90. He started working for Homestake Gold Mine in March of 1968, and worked there until the Mine closed in 2001 as an underground rock driller. One thing he was most proud of at the mine is that he never had a loss time accident.
Wally enjoyed spending his summer time at his cabin at Iron Creek while fishing, drinking coffee with friends at the store and sitting by the lake front. He also enjoyed Rock collecting. Over the years he made many beautiful belt buckles and knife handles out of rock he had collected.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Kehn; and three children, Mark (Stacie) Sturgis, Michele (Roger) Leavitt, Wickenburg, AZ, and Lisa (Jon) Anderson, Rapid City, SD; special nephew, Dan (Kim) Earley, Rapid City; one sister, Della (Ken) Luing, N. Mankota, MN; his grandchildren, Jaden (Nick) Beach, Reegin Kehn, Pasyn and Taylum Leavitt, Ella Ward, Lainie Anderson, Brad (Clint) Painter, and Brittany VanSickle; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 7, 2021, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, SD, with Father Timothy Castor officiating with a visitation starting at 9:00 a.m.
Interment will follow at St. Aloysius cemetery in Sturgis, SD.
