Wayne Lloyd Lettau passed away on March 15, 2023, at the age of 59.
Wayne was born in Sturgis, SD, on March 16, 1963 to Levert and Janet (Jarding) Lettau. He graduated from Newell High School, where he met his wife, Susan. The two married on June 6, 1987. After high school, Wayne attended South Dakota State University and National College. Those stops led him into a career with American Transport that spanned over 30 years. That’s a true testament to the loyalty Wayne showed to those he cared about.
In his free time Wayne was very active in the community. He competed in pool leagues, created one-of-a-kind woodworking projects, and emersed himself in the motorcycle culture. Wayne worked hard to keep motorcycle riders safe. He taught a motorcycle safety course for 19 years and was an active member for A.B.A.T.E of South Dakota, along with Susan. These contributions earned the couple recognition as members of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame in 2020.
Anyone who encountered Wayne knows he loved to tell stories. He will be remembered for epic tales shared with friends from around the world on the front porch. He will be remembered for stories of adventures past on the sage brush scrubland of Butte County. His nieces and nephews were often left laughing but sometimes rolling their eyes at the things he told them. Anyone who took the time to listen was lifted in ways they may not have noticed at the time. Wayne’s big spirit was always on display and the world is better because of it.
Wayne is survived in death by his wife, Susan; brothers, Dan (Tammy) Lettau, Pierre, SD, and Larry (Barbara Jean) Lettau, Sour Creek, TX; sisters, Belinda Tope, Belle Fourche, SD, and Kela (Steve) Keiry, Nisland, SD. Wayne is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Levert Lettau; mother, Janet Bawdon; stepfather, Elmer Kivimaki; and brother, Kim Lettau.
Visitation will be 5 -7 p.m. on Monday, March 20, 2023, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at Hale Hall in Whitewood, SD.
