GILLETTE, Wyo. – They’re getting down to the final rundown at the National High School Finals Rodeo, and on Thursday, several South Dakota athletes had good runs in their respective races.
Piper Cordes of Wall turned in a 17.24 second run in the barrel racing, the quickest time in the Thursday morning run. Cordes currently sits fifth in the average.
Denton Good from Long Valley has the top time in the steer wrestling Thursday morning, with a 4.92 second take down. He is also fifth in the average.
Malcom Heathershaw of Quinn had a 67-point ride Thursday morning in the saddle bronc. That was second best in the run.
In the goat tying, Maci Maher of McLaughlin had a 8.44 second run on Thursday morning. That puts Maher fifth in the average, with another South Dakotan, Brylee Grubb of Spearfish, in second.
On Friday, Thayne Elshere of Hereford makes his second go-round ride, as does Jestyn Woodward of Custer in bull riding, Jaysee Jones of Faith in goat tying and Grey Gilbert of Buffalo in steer wrestling.
On Saturday, Landry Haugen of Sturgis in girls cutting takes her next run.
