BLACK HAWK, S.D. – Governor Kristi Noem talked Thursday with families forced out of their homes in a Blackhawk neighborhood due to sinkholes that have opened up, exposing an old gypsum mine.
Noem says the state will help Meade County apply for a FEMA grant that would pay for 75-percent of a home’s appraised value pre-sinkhole.
However, the grant is highly competitive and not guaranteed.
If the grant does go through Governor Noem says then, the state will step in by fulfilling the ten percent share of the cost sharing formula that would need to happen in order for that to be of any assistance to the families.
“That the state would commit to stepping up and fulfilling our ten percent share of the cost sharing formula that would need to happen in order for that to be of any assistance to the families,” said Noem.
