North American Sheep Day offers competitions, stock dogs, wool spinning, lamb tastings and more

RAPID CITY, SD – Every year, the Black Hills Stock Show highlights the American sheep industry’s valuable role in providing the world with high-quality food and fiber. North American Sheep Day is being held Thurs., February 3, 2022, in the James Kjerstad Event Center on the Central States Fairgrounds. Events start at 10:00 A.M. The day is full of opportunities to experience sheep production firsthand Among the highlights are the North American Stock Dog Trials and National Sheep Shearing Contest.

Spectators can see first-hand, the agility and intelligence of stock dogs and their unremarkable bond with their owners as they work together to gather sheep. Also, learn about the hard work and commitment of the sheep shearers who are dedicated to animal care and helping provide one of the worlds most sustainable fibers.

North American Sheep Day will also include mutton bustin’ and numerous educational activities including learning how wool is spun into yarn. Free lamb tasting samples will be provided, and lamb will also be available in concessions on the fairgrounds. This one-of-a-kind event provides an entire flock to final product experience all in one place. -with something for the whole family.

The second annual BHSS Wool Judging Contest is set for Fri., February 4 and is open to collegiate and youth participants in the Fine Arts Building located on the fairgrounds. The collegiate contest begins at 8:00 A.M. and the youth contest begins at 12:00 A.M. Wool evaluation helps students develop an understanding of wool quality and how wools are classified for different market channels.

For more small ruminant fun and competition, the Show Rite Youth Goat Show will begin at 12:00 Noon, Fri., February 4, 2022, in the Barnett Fieldhouse at The Monument.  The following day, Sat., Feb. 5 at 12:00 Noon is the Show Rite Youth Sheep Show, also at The Monument. Classes include market lambs, market goats, and wether does.
