Officer involved shooting under investigation

WEBSTER, S.D.—The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI)  is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Day County.

Tim Bormann of the South Dakota Attorney General’s office says the shooting occurred Tuesday near Webster.

“The Day County Sheriff’s Office was called in to do a welfare check on an individual threatening potential self-harm,” said Borman.  “Things ‘went south,’ shots were fired at the officers and fire was returned. The individual in question is currently hospitalized and is expected to survive.”

Bormann says there were no injuries sustained by law enforcement officers.

“The DCI will look at the officer involved shooting aspect of the incident. After the report is filed with the Attorney General, a determination on the validity of that shooting will be forthcoming from our office.”

Bormann would not identify the name of the individual shot, or the officers involved.

He does say the investigation is continuing.

“We aim for 30 days out from the incident for the DCI  report to be in the hands of the Attorney General to determine if the shooting was justifiable.”
