KEYSTONE, S.D. – Fire crews continue battling two fires in the Keystone area.
One fire, dubbed the 244 Fire, is burning near Mount Rushmore, but authorities say the national memorial is not threatened. It has burned between 75 and 100 acres at last report and was threatening a little more than a dozen structures in the area. More resources were on their way Tuesday to help battle the blaze.
The other fire near Keystone is a mile and a half south of town and its size was downgraded to 15 acres overnight. Fire crews spent Monday night doing burnout operations and mopping up on that fire.
Mount Rushmore National Memorial remains closed due to the fire activity in the area.
