One rescued, one dead after trench collapse in Rapid City

RAPID CITY, S.D. — One person is dead following an afternoon construction accident on Rapid City’s north side.

RCFD Spokeswoman Tessa Jaeger says the incident happened at a construction site near the intersection of Coal Bank and Auburn Drive in Rapid City.

The incident occurred while construction crews used a backhoe on a trench while working on a home near an apartment complex.

Two males were involved. Jaeger says one male was fully submerged and the other was buried up to his chest. The worker partially buried was rescued.

Jaeger stated in a press release that the body of the male who was completely submerged was recovered from the trench around 8:45 p.m. The identify of the deceased has not been released pending notification of relatives.

The accident is under investigation.
