Only 15 Percent of S.D. Pastures Good to Excellent

UNDATED – For the week ending Sunday, there were 6.7 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 27% very short, 44% short, 28% adequate, and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 24% very short, 43% short, 31% adequate, and 2% surplus.

Corn condition rated 13% very poor, 18% poor, 30% fair, 35% good, and 4% excellent. Corn dented was 89%, behind 94% last year, but ahead of 84% for the five-year average. Mature was 37%, behind 48% last year, but near 36% average. Harvested was 2%, near 4% last year, and equal to average.

Soybean condition rated 7% very poor, 18% poor, 34% fair, 39% good, and 2% excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves was 52%, well behind 76% last year, and behind 59% average. Harvested was 2%, near 3% both last year and average.

Winter wheat planted was 32%, near 30% last year and 29% average. Emerged was 5%, near 1% last year and 2% average.

Sorghum condition rated 5% very poor, 26% poor, 28% fair, 41% good, and 0% excellent. Sorghum coloring was 94%, near 97% last year, but ahead of 83% average. Mature was 42%, near 40% last year, and ahead of 26% average. Harvested was 6%, near 5% last year and 2% average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 24% very poor, 31% poor, 30% fair, 14% good, and 1% excellent.
