STURGIS, S.D. – Wednesday was Patriot’s Day across the state and nation – a day set aside to remember those lost in the terrorist attacks on America on September 11th, 2001.
Several communities across the area held ceremonies to honor those lost in the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks as well those who died in the crash of Flight 93 in Pennsylvania.
In Sturgis, the American Legion and VFW held a ceremony outside the legion hall. The ceremony honors those lost and all the first responders who put their lives on the line every day.
Meanwhile, the spirit of remembrance was alive and well at Corral Drive Elementary School’s patriot parade.
The event, held in honor of local police officers, firefighters, and military service members, also served as a tribute to those lost during the September 11th attacks.
And in Spearfish, the Fire Department held their annual 9-11 memorial stair climb at Lyle Hare Stadium on the campus of Black Hills State University.
Firefighters and guests climbed the equivalent of the 110 stories that made up the towers at the World Trade Center.
Spearfish Fire says they do this in honor of those who made the ultimate sacrifice and to keep a promise that was made 23 years ago.
