Pedestrian struck by pickup truck Monday morning dies

STURGIS, S.D. – A 68-year-old male from Sturgis had died following a vehicle vs pedestrian crash Monday morning.

First responders were called to the incident at approximately 8:26 a.m.

Upon arrival, authorities found a pedestrian that had been struck by a pickup at the intersection of Harley Davidson Way and Sherman Street.

Sturgis Police Chief Geody VanDewater says a 59-year-old male was driving a 2014 Chevy pickup westbound on Sherman Street. After stopping at the intersection of Harley Davidson Way, the vehicle continued west striking the 68-year-old male in the crosswalk.

The pedestrian was trapped underneath the truck when first responders arrived and was reportedly not responsive. Officers and by-standers were able to move the vehicle off the victim and provided first aid until the ambulance arrived and transported him to Sturgis Regional Hospital, where he died of his injuries.

The driver was cited for an obstructed windshield.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of family.

The accident remains under investigation by the Sturgis Police Department and South Dakota Highway Patrol.
