DEADWOOD, S.D. – Deadwood Police say the pedestrian struck while attempting to cross an intersection on April 17th has died from his injuries.
The pedestrian was identified as 68-year-old William Whitley of Concord, North Carolina.
An investigation determined Ramona Davis (58, of Lead, SD) was driving her 1999 GMC Denali west bound on Pioneer Way in the outside travel lane. As she approached the intersection with Lee Street, Davis traveled alongside a line of cars in the inside lane waiting to turn left onto Lee Street. Whitley was crossing Pioneer Way in the crosswalk.

Whitley jogged across the intersection, crossing in front of the stopped vehicle in the inside lane waiting to turn left, and as he proceeded past the stopped vehicle and continued crossing, he was struck by Davis driving in the outside lane. Whitley was taken to Monument Hospital in Rapid City, where on April 18th, he died from his injuries.
Deadwood Police say based on witness statements and video evidence, Davis did not see Whitley crossing the street due to the line of vehicles stopped in the inside lane. The crosswalk lights at the intersection were operable however, not activated at the time Whitley crossed the street.
Based on evidence at the scene, Davis was not traveling at a high rate of speed and was not under the influence.
Davis was initially cited for Failure to Yield-Right-Away to Pedestrian in Crosswalk. All information will be reviewed by the Lawrence County States Attorney’s Office.
