Pennington County Authorities locate lost hunter Thursday night

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Pennington County authorities say they located a lost hunter on Thursday night.

In a release, authorities say about 9 pm, the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a lost hunter. Pennington and Custer County Search and Rescue and other agencies were deployed along with a thermal drone. The man was found safely about an hour and a half later by a Pennington County Sheriff’s Deputy.

The 72 year old man from Alexandria, South Dakota was elk hunting with friends. Luckily he was found quickly and unharmed.

Whether hunting or hiking in the Black Hills, authorities say safety measures are recommended.

Always take a cell phone with you. Even if you have no phone service in a particular area, you might be able to get to a higher point if necessary.

Use a GPS guided device that marks roads. Don’t go into the woods without technology.

Make sure you have food, medications and layers of warmth. Wear orange or at least have brighter colors that can be tied to you or a nearby landmark in case you get into trouble and need to be found.
