Pennington County authorities say four people hurt in fireworks incident

RAPID CITY, S.D. —Pennington County authorities say four people, including a child, were transported to Monument Health in Rapid City with non-life threatening injuries Thursday night, following a fireworks discharge at a private lot in unincorporated Pennington County.

According to Jerome Harvey, the Pennington County Fire Administrator, the Rapid Valley Volunteer Fire Department and Pennington County Sheriff’s Office was called to the lot for a report of a fireworks discharge, which was where a private fireworks display of consumer grade fireworks and was located near the intersection of East South Dakota Highway 44 and Covington Street.

During their response, fire units were later informed of several injuries as a result of the fireworks, where they helped those in need of medical attention on scene. Kirk Buchholz, a Patrol Sergeant, with the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to KNBN-TV that two adults and a child were three of the victims that were transported the hospital.

A small grassfire was also put out on scene.
The incident remains under investigation between the PCSO and Rapid Valley Volunteer Fire Department.
