Person seriously hurt in crash on Highway 14A Thursday night

LEAD, S.D. – First responders were dispatched to a single vehicle accident on Highway 14A in Spearfish Canyon Thursday night.

According to the Lead Fire Department, the accident occurred near mile marker 26 at approximately 7:14 p.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a pickup truck that had left the roadway and landed on its side.

First responders found a single patient trapped inside along with one dog. Firefighters from the Lead Volunteer Fire Department used struts to secure the vehicle from any additional movement, and once the vehicle was secured, they used a variety of extrication tools and methods to remove the windshield.

Once the windshield was removed, the patient was able to be taken out of the vehicle and placed on a backboard where they were transported to a nearby ambulance and an awaiting life flight helicopter.

The dog was also removed from the vehicle and appeared to be uninjured.

The crash is under investigation.
