Petition to recall Sturgis mayor begins circulating

STURGIS, S.D. – A petition to recall Sturgis Mayor Angela Wilkerson has reportedly begun circulating.

Two reasons are listed on the petition for the recall of Mayor Wilkerson: “The mayor’s refusal to terminate the employment of Mark Marshall as City Attorney amounts to gross partiality and nonfeasance. 2. The mayor’s handling of the 2025 municipal budget amounts to gross incompetence.”

Several residents are reportedly circulating the petitions. Circulators need to gather more than 1,000 signers.

Wilkerson recently presented her 2025 budget, warning council members it was going to be a ‘bare bones’ budget due expenditures outgrowing revenues in the city.

However, council members were upset for not receiving a copy of the budget ahead of the mayor’s presentation. It presented a lot of questions from council members.

Council had also wanted to terminate Marshall immediately at a special meeting last month. Mayor Wilkerson told council members they were not allowed to do that, and instead, asked the council to ask for Marshall’s resignation. Marshall has tendered his resignation, effective November 1st.

If a necessary amount of signers are certified, the council will need to set a recall election.
