STURGIS, S.D. – The City of Sturgis has received petitions seeking to refer to the voters of Sturgis the Sturgis City Council’s decision to sign the Spirit of Sturgis TT Race host agreement for this year’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
Sturgis Finance Officer Adam Hosch said he received petitions from citizens Tammy Bohn and Brenda Vasknetz on Thursday. By law, the citizens would have had until Wednesday, March 20, to submit the petitions on a referable question.
The petitioners are asking that the resolution of the Sturgis Common Council authorizing the Council President to sign the Professional Services Contract (Host Agreement) with AMA-Pro, AFT-E and Outerkind, passed on Feb. 20, be submitted to the voters for their approval or rejection.
Hosch and his staff are in the process of verifying signatures on the petitions as well as determining the required number of signatures needed to present the petitions to the Sturgis City Council.

The required number of signatures is 5% of the registered voters in Sturgis as recorded by the county auditor on the second Tuesday in January in the year the petition is filed – in this case, 260 signatures.
AMA Pro Racing, in collaboration with Øuterkind and the City of Sturgis, have been working since last September to stage the inaugural Spirit of Sturgis TT race on Sunday, Aug. 11, coinciding with the final Sunday of the84th Annual City of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
The Sturgis City Council voted 5-3 at its meeting on Feb. 20 to approve signing the contract that would set up the race which would take place through the streets of downtown Sturgis.
The issue of the petitions will be included on the Sturgis City Council agenda at its meeting on Monday, March 18. One item will focus on the certification by the City Finance Officer of required number of signatures submitted by the petitioners and a second item will focus on the council setting a date for an election.
