CHUGWATER, WY – A striking photograph from the recent Chugwater Chili Cook-Off and Roundup has captured widespread attention for its uncanny resemblance to Wyoming’s iconic steamboat logo. The image, taken by Michael Magill of Michael Magill Photography, evokes the state’s storied rodeo history.
Northern Ag Network’s Andy Schwab spoke with Magill, who shared his journey from college rodeo to rodeo photography. After a stint in the Marine Corps and civilian law enforcement, Magill returned to his roots in 2021, documenting rodeos with his camera.
Attending the roundup for the first time, Magill praised event organizer Josh Hopkins. “It was a neat event, blending the Chili Cook-Off with cowboy culture. The night before, we had campfire concerts under the bluffs, which was amazing,” Magill recounted.
The photograph’s setting is steeped in history as well. “Steamboat, the legendary bucking horse that couldn’t be ridden, was foaled near what is now the Tri County Mercantile in Chugwater,” Magill explained. In addition, the horse in Magill’s photo is owned by Rand Selle of Selle Rodeo Productions and the Lazy 20 brand that Selle’s use is the same brand Steamboat’s original owner had in the 1920’s.
Capturing such an iconic image holds deep significance for Magill. “Living in Wyoming and being part of this culture is why we do what we do. We’re committed to preserving this Western way of life and sharing it with the world,” he said.
Magill intends to title the photo, “Steamboat’s Legacy” and prints will be available for purchase at a later date.
