Plane crash kills one, incident under investigation

IDEAL, S.D.  — One person died from a plane crash in rural Yankton County Wednesday morning.

According to a Facebook post, Yankton first responders received a call at 7:48 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, 2024, for the report of a plane crash in a bean field near Ideal, S.D.

Upon arrival, one victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the victim has not been released yet pending notification of family members.

According to flight records, the 4-seat Piper left Sioux Falls, S.D., at 7:09 a.m. Wednesday.

A little over a half an hour later, there was a report of a plane crash in a bean field southwest of Irene.

A preliminary report says the plane crashed “under unknown” circumstances and following the crash there was a fire.

Yankton authorities asked the public to stay clear of the crash area as this is an ongoing investigation. Barricades have been put up and deputies are remaining on the scene.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are working with the Yankton County Sheriff’s Office on the crash.
