STURGIS, S.D. – Sturgis Police say they were called to Sturgis Elementary School Thursday after parents reported a disturbance in the parking lot.
Chief Geody Vandewater says they received the 9-1-1 call as school was being released.
He says parents reported there was some sort of a disturbance in the parking lot that involved a gun.
Officers responded and were told by one of the reporting parties, a male suspect pulled a gun, pointed it at another male and threatened him. The male was last seen walking towards the school with the gun and his hand in his pants pocket. Officers immediately went to locate the subject and he was found walking back from the School.
Due to the male being in possession of a gun and for the safety of the kids around the immediate area, he was ordered on the ground and taken into custody without further incident.
The male suspect was placed under arrest for numerous criminal charges.
Vandewater says the Sturgis Police Department would like to thank the parents for being aware of their surroundings, and not hesitating to call 911 immediately. He says “this allowed for a quick response by all of our officers.”
