RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City police are investigating a vehicle vs pedestrian crash that has left one person dead.
According to police, they were dispatched to the intersection of Mount Rushmore Road and St Patrick Street just before 6:30 for a report of a vehicle vs pedestrian incident.
Upon arrival, police located three pedestrians and two vehicles that were involved in the crash.
After speaking to witnesses at the scene, law enforcement learned that a group of pedestrians were walking southbound in the middle of Mt. Rushmore Road, when a passenger vehicle slowed for them. A southbound Ford F-150 swerved to the right to avoid the slowing vehicle.
The F-150 struck one pedestrian before coming to rest on the right side of the road. A southbound SUV then struck a second and third pedestrian who were also on the road.
The first pedestrian refused medical transport, while the second and third pedestrians were transported to the hospital with serious injuries. The third pedestrian died of their injuries at the hospital.
The crash remains under active investigation by the RCPD’s Critical Accident Reconstruction Team.
The name of the deceased has not made public pending notification of next-of-kin.
