LAS VEGAS – Clint Summers and Jake Long moved atop the leaderboard with a 3.6-second run during Round 7 of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge. But there was one team remaining.
Header Coleman Proctor and heeler Logan Medlin needed to set a new round record on the night’s final run to win. They did with a 3.5-second run to earn their first go-round buckle of the competition before 16,704 spectators at the Thomas & Mack Center.
“That’s the reason why we work so hard,” Proctor said. “That’s the reason we spend months of the year away from our families. It’s for moments like that right there when you’re backed into a corner and need to do good.
“I don’t know what it’s like to hit a grand slam in the World Series, but I can’t feel any better than that right there.”
The run paid $33,687 and broke the previous round record of 3.6 seconds initially set by Derrick Begay/Cesar de la Cruz in 2009 and shared by four other teams.
Proctor and Medlin who have earned $80,634 each at the NFR, sit ninth in the average at 20.6 seconds on five head and move to fourth in the PRCA | RAM World Standings.
“It’s a sigh of relief because you know you’re more than capable,” Medlin said. “Our gameplan from the start has been to keep our head down and no matter what – whether it’s going good or bad – to not get too high or too low.
“We’ve had some high moments this week and some low. But I think this is proof that our game plan is paying off.”
Miller toughs out third go-round win in bareback
Bradlee Miller entered Round 7 of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge beat up, battered and bruised.
Miller suffered a shoulder burner in the fifth round, but he wouldn’t let anything stop him from getting on another bareback horse on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old gritted his teeth and paired with Frontier Rodeo’s Frontier Rodeo Coffee Full Baggage for an 88.5-point ride to win his third round of the NFR.
“It doesn’t take much to get fired up in this building, no matter how hurt you are,” Miller said.
The Huntsville, Texas, native earned another $33,687 on the trip and earned his sixth trip to the pay window. He’s earned $178,436 at the NFR, the most amongst bareback competitors, and sits fifth in the average at 558 points on seven head.
“This week has been unreal,” Miller said. “I made my goal when I came here to win a go round. That came in round number two. Then I made my goal to win $150,000 and shoot, we passed that. I don’t know what’s next. It’d be awesome to win Top Gun and maybe even a gold buckle here.”
Miller said he’s trying to maximize his rest and recovery time between rides, to get himself in the best position possible to take advantage of his opportunities.
“There’s so much adrenaline pumping when you’re on a bucking horse that it’s hard to feel much,” Miller said. “So, I’m just going to keep taking it one day at a time and go for the win every time.”
Tie-down roper Dylan Hancock wins Round 7 with electric run
Tie-down roper Dylan Hancock showed he belonged with the best, and on Wednesday night he was the best at the Wrangler NFR.
The San Angelo, Texas, cowboy stopped the clock with an electric run of 6.7 seconds to win Round 7.
“Man, this is what dreams are made of,” Hancock said. “I’ve been dreaming of this my whole life and for it to finally come true is just so special. This is truly the greatest feeling ever. First time I tied a six like that and on top of that it’s at the Thomas and Mack Center. It’s just awesome.”
Hancock has placed in four rounds in his Wrangler NFR debut and earned $78,189.
“It’s been everything I’ve ever dreamed of at the Thomas & Mack, especially the grand entry, that’s the coolest thing ever for sure,” Hancock said. “We’ve been battling this week, made a couple of good runs but finally got it tapped off (Wednesday night) and got the dub.
“I just feel we’ve been making decent runs and so I told myself to cut loose. I told one of my good buddies let’s go to the South Point. As soon we get off that stage I’m going to get off and strap (that go-round buckle) on.”
Saddle bronc rider Brody Cress claims Round 7 victory
Saddle bronc rider Brody Cress has had plenty of success at the Wrangler NFR, winning the average in 2017, 2019 and 2021.
The Hillsdale, Wyo., cowboy won his first round when he captured Round 7 with an 88-point ride on Four Star Rodeo’s Wall Street.
“You just have to look at it as ten, one-day rodeos,” Cress said. “Something bad can happen one night and the next day you still have a chance to win a lot of money. The best thing I can do is have a short-term memory. There’s a lot of money to be had and I’m excited to see where I end up.”
Cress has earned $103,093 at this year’s NFR and was quick to praise his draw.
“That’s a great horse. I got to get on her last year and placed in a round, so I knew she was going to give me a chance,” said Cress, 28. “She was fresh after not being selected in the first five rounds, so she was just back there waiting for her chance to shine. I knew that if I did my job, we would have a good chance.”
Steer wrestlers Jesse Brown, Dakota Eldridge share Round 7 crown
Steer wrestlers Jesse Brown and Dakota Eldridge were in the sharing mood on Wednesday night.
Brown and Eldridge split the Round 7 title with identical 3.5-second runs at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Brown, who also won Round 5 (3.6 seconds), has moved up to fourth in the world standings with $216,172. He is eighth in the average at 36.8 seconds on seven head.
Eldridge is No. 1 in the world with $259,001. He is 11th in the average at 25.3 seconds on three head.
This is Eldridge’s 11th appearance at the NFR and his first round win since 2020 when he split Round 1 with Brown and Blake Knowles with 3.9-second runs at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
“Yeah, it’s pretty exciting, like Dakota just said, it’s really hard,” Brown said. “Rounds are hard to win here with all these guys and this was a lot of fun.”
Brown was once again riding fellow NFR steer wrestler Justin Shaffer’s horse, Banker.
“I’m down in the average a little bit, and down in money too probably, so I just have to try and win every round, that’s basically what I have to try and do,” Brown said.
Eldridge, who is riding Swamper, was thrilled to be heading back to the South Point for the go-round presentation.
“I used to go out there pretty frequently, man just kind of had some bad luck and just weird stuff happening,” said Eldridge, who has earned $89,600 at this year’s NFR. “I’ve been here long enough now, I’ve had every type of Finals you can expect, this is the only Finals I am out of the average. But there is still somewhat of an outside shot at the gold buckle, it’s going to be really hard to do, but there’s still three rounds to win.”
Kassie Mowry shatters record in Round 7 victory
At the conclusion of Round 7 of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge we’re beginning to run out superlatives to describe barrel racer Kassie Mowry.
The Dublin, Texas, cowgirl set her third round record of the NFR on Wednesday night with a 13.19-second run. It happened so fast Mowry doesn’t even remember the run.
“I have to watch the video because I don’t remember what happened honestly after these runs,” said Mowry. “I know tonight I did ask him to go a little more up the pen because I’ve been asking him to run a really straight line to it. I thought for a second, we might catch a barrel on the backend, but we just got by it enough.”
The time marked the third fastest run in NFR history behind only Hailey Kisel (13.11 seconds in 2017, 13.17 seconds in 2017).
The win improved her NFR earnings to $197,996, which is the most among any competitor at this year’s event. On Thursday night, Mowry will try to become the first barrel racer to win five rounds in a row at the NFR since Jimmie Munroe in 1984 aboard her standout horse Smooth Cadet.
“I can’t even fathom tying her for that record,” Mowry said. “I mean it’s just incredible. What he’s (Jarvis) already done is more than I ever anticipated or imagined. We are just here having fun.”
