Pursuit that begins at Rapid City ends in Lawrence County Friday afternoon

STURGIS, S.D. – A pursuit that began out of Rapid City ended in Lawrence County Friday afternoon following a multi-county chase.

Sturgis Police Chief Geody Vandewater says Rapid City police had a pursuit with a car that went north out of Rapid City and into Meade County. He says the R.C.P.D. terminated the pursuit and passed the information along to dispatch.

Summerset Police initially located the vehicle westbound on I-90 and Meade County Deputy attempted to stop the vehicle around exit 32, but he failed to stop and another pursuit started.

A Sturgis Police officer was able to lay down spikes, deflating the driver’s side tire in the area of Exit 30. Despite the flat tire, the suspect continued westbound to approximately mile marker 29, when he crossed the Interstate, went through a fence and came back to Sturgis on the Whitewood Service Road.

Vandewater says he then went onto Highway 14A and continued westbound in Lawrence County until he finally pulled off and stopped in the area of 76 Loop Road. He says the subject then surrendered to authorities and was taken into custody without incident.

The suspect’s name wasn’t released and an investigation into the incident is underway.
