RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City area fire crews battled a couple of structure fires in bitterly cold temperatures Monday.
Just after noon, the North Haines Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to 900 block of Virginia Ln. in unincorporated Meade County, for a reported structure fire in or near an attached residential garage. While units were responding to the scene, initial information obtained by dispatch confirmed that there was an active structure fire at the scene prompting a full first-alarm assignment to be sent.
First arriving units arrived to find a free-burning structure fire on the exterior of the attached garage that was burning into the garage as well as the nearby camper trailer. With the quick actions of the first arriving crews providing an aggressive interior fire attack the fire was kept to the attached garage, limiting the attached residence to primarily smoke damage. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes of the first unit arrival.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, but appears to be accidental. The occupants have been assisted by the American Red Cross
There were no injuries to the firefighters or occupants and no domestic animals were lost.
Also on Monday, the Scenic Volunteer Fire Department responded to a reported chimney fire.
The fire was held to the chimney area of the home, and all occupants are safe.
Forecast stated the temperature was -35F with windchill while the fire was fought.
