Rapid City Area Schools voted to keep mask mandate in effect for remainder of school year

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Rapid City Area School Board on Monday night decided to keep the mask mandate in place for the remainder of the school year – which is approximately 11 days.

The RCAS Board of Education upheld the mandate on a 5-2 during their regularly scheduled meeting. Board members Jim Hansen and Kate Thomas voted to remove the mandate.

RCAS had sent out a survey last month to gauge interest on removing the mandate before the end of the school year. The survey showed families overwhelmingly voted to remove the mandate by a vote of 60-percent to 40-percent. The survey also indicated RCAS staff were in favor of removing it.

However, board members remained concerned about a lack of input from healthcare professionals on the matter. They also cited some potential flaws in the survey.
