RAPID CITY, SD — The Rapid City Christian Lady Comets snapped their four-game losing streak by holding off the Sturgis Scoopers 57-43 on Tuesday night at Hart Ranch.
The Scoopers shot 16% from the field in the first half, digging themselves into a 26-11 hole at halftime. Sturgis battled back and cut the Lady Comet lead to just nine points in the third quarter, but couldn’t stop sophomore Hayden Thorton, who dropped in 12 second half points to lead Rapid City Christian to the win.
Thorton finished with 19 points on the night, with Sadie Marshall adding 11. The Lady Comets shot 44% from the field, 61% from the free throw line, had 21 turnovers and 31 rebounds. Rapid City Christian improved to 5-5 on the year.
Tori Williams had a good night for the Scoopers, scoring 17 points, including four three-pointers. Addy Kossler chipped in 11 points. The Scoopers shot 29% from the field and 41% from the charity stripe. Sturgis committed 13 turnovers and snared 18 rebounds. The Scoopers fell to 1-4 on the season.
In the boy’s matchup, the Rapid City Christian boys used a stiff man-to-man defense along with full-court pressure to force double-digit Scooper turnovers in a 76-37 win over Sturgis.Â
The Scoopers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead but Rapid City Christian came roaring back to lead 25-10 after one quarter and 42-19 at the half. Sturgis could only manage 18 second half points, losing their fourth game in five attempts this season.
Sturgis shot 30% from the field and 70% from the free throw line for the night. The Scoopers had 26 turnovers and 19 rebounds and were led by Ryan Heinert with 10 points.
Rapid City Christian was led by Wes Schlabach with 16 points. Julius Frog added 12 points and six rebounds. Â
The Comets improved to 8-1 and the Scoopers dropped to 1-4 on the season.Â
