Rapid City Council hears requests for budget surplus

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Rapid City Council met in special session Monday night to hear requests for a projected $20 million dollar surplus in the city’s general fund.

Mayor Steve Allender says the surplus is from previously budgeted items and COVID-19 relief money that remains unspent.

Among the proposals submitted was a $1.8-million dollar request from the Rapid City Police Department to establish a “Southwest Precinct.”

Another million dollar request was provided by the RCPD and Fire Department to purchase radios compliant with a new, statewide radio system upgrade.

The city’s finance office also requested $2 million for the Opportunity Capture Fund, which is used for economic development to encourage new/expanding businesses to the Rapid City area.

The  council took no action but accepted all requests for further consideration.
