Rapid City extending its downtown snow removal alerts

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City is proposing extending the boundaries to its snow removal alert for the downtown corridor.

The cit’s public works director can declare a snow removal alert when a certain amount of snow is forecast. The alert is for residents who live within the alert area to move their cars off the streets so city crews can clear snow.

Darrell Shoemaker, Communications Coordinator, says they anticipate expanding the current snow alert area from Fifth Street to West Boulevard and from Kansas City Street to Omaha Street.

During times of a snow emergency, cars will need to be moved from the hours of 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. so snow plows can efficiently clear the streets.

The city’s public works committee will be presented with the plan on Tuesday and if approved, it will head to the full council on November 18.
