Rapid City Fire crews respond to garage fire Wednesday afternoon

RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Rapid City Fire Department responded to a fire Wednesday afternoon.

Fire officials say the fire, their fifth so far in 2022, was inside of a single car detached garage.

According to a release from the Rapid City Fire Department, crews were dispatched to a structure fire in the 3000 block of West Omaha Street at 2:00 p.m. Monday afternoon. Arriving on scene, they found a single car detached garage with smoke coming from inside.

Because of the freezing temperatures, the first hose line that crews brought in froze, so a second hose line was utilized to fight the fire from the side door. Once the fire was knocked down and they were inside, they noticed fire around a wood burning stove that had spread to items nearby.

Although the fire was extinguished quickly, overhauling the garage did take a while as crews worked to make sure the fire was completely extinguished. The freezing temperatures became hazardous for crews as ice was built up quickly from all the running water to the fire.

There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
