Rapid City home heavily damaged in Monday fire

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City fire crews say a Monday fire heavily damaged a home on the south side of town.

Shortly before 1:30 Monday afternoon, the Rapid City Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire in the four thousand block of Milehigh Avenue. The call came in as a report of flames and black smoke coming from the back deck.

When crews arrived on scene, the fire was already into the rafters and into the attic, which allowed the fire to spread throughout the home quickly. Crews attacked the fire from the front and back of the house and were able to stop the forward progress of the fire fairly quickly.

Overhauling the structure took a while, as crews had to pull much of the ceiling and get into the attic area to ensure complete extinguishment. One cat was saved from the home, put on oxygen by our medics, and given back to the family. There were no injuries.

The home is a complete loss and American Red Cross has been called to assist the family.

Crews that responded: Battalion 1, Engine 7, Medic 7, Squad 1, Truck 1, and Truck 3.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
