Rapid City leaders finalizing requirements and procedures for medical cannabis licenses

RAPID CITY, S.D. – City leaders in Rapid City are finalizing the requirements and procedures necessary to apply for medical cannabis licenses.

Officials say applications will be accepted beginning Monday, October 4.

The city’s website will list the steps and requirements potential licensees must take to apply for one.

City leaders say after reviewing applications, they will either issue or deny a license within 45 days.

After a license is granted, applicants must then apply for a permit from the South Dakota Department of Health.

Only 15 dispensary licenses will be available, roughly one per 5,000 people in the city.

City spokesman Darrell Shoemaker says they licenses will not be distributed on a first come, first serve basis. Instead, he says, if more than 15 applications are received, they will use a lottery to allocate the licenses.

There is a $1,500 application fee required from applicants.

City officials are prepared to help applicants through the process and work with individuals and the state on any issues or questions that arise as applications start to roll in.
