RAPID CITY, S.D. – Police in Rapid City are investigating a stabbing as a homicide after learning the victim died as a result of injuries sustained in the incident.
Police say at around 10:25 p.m. Wednesday night, they were dispatched to an apartment at 10 Surfwood Drive for a report of a stabbing that had just occurred. On arrival, police located the male victim with an obvious stab wound to the chest. Police provided emergency first aid before a medical unit arrived. The medical unit transported the victim to the hospital for the treatment of serious, life-threatening injuries.
After the initial investigation, police determined the suspect responsible for the stabbing was 34-year-old Ashley Peltier of Rapid City. She was placed under arrest for Aggravated Assault before being transported to the Pennington County Jail.
Early this morning, police were advised that the stabbing victim had succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The deceased in identified as 30-year-old James Rice of Rapid City. Rice was also known as Stanley Kennard III.
Peltier is now being held at the Pennington County Jail for the offense of Second Degree Murder.
The ongoing, active investigation into the incident is being conducted jointly with the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office.
