RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City Police are investigating an overnight shooting as a homicide after one of the victims succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.
Police say at around 1:30 a.m. on July 5th, police were called to 1721 N. Maple Avenue for a report of shots fired in the area. On arrival, officers observed a vehicle leaving the area at a high rate of speed before running a stop sign. Police pursued the vehicle until it came to a stop in the 800 block of Blaine Avenue. Five males were observed exiting the vehicle and fleeing on foot. A perimeter was established and police apprehended three of the five males. They were placed under arrest for:
- 31-year-old Rodney American Horse of Rapid City (Obstruction)
- 25-year-old Elias Campos of Rapid City (Obstruction, Possession of Controlled Substance)
- 26-year-old Jalen Storm of Allen (Obstruction)
In the meantime, other responding officers located the two male gunshot victims in the parking lot of the apartment complex. Both were transported to the hospital where one male succumbed to injuries sustained in the shooting. The other male remains in critical condition.
The identity of the deceased is being withheld until proper notification of next-of-kin can be made.
The investigation into this homicide is active and ongoing, and is being conducted jointly with the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office.
