Rapid City police investigating fatal stabbing

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City Police say an early-morning stabbing is now being investigated as a homicide after the victim succumbed to his injuries following transport to the hospital.

Police say they received a report of a stabbing that had just occurred at 4:10 a.m. Thursday in the area of 120 Surfwood Drive and arrived to find the victim, identified as 24-year-old Leon Richards, lying on the ground.

Richards was taken to the hospital, where he died.

Since the time of the original call, police have been working diligently to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident and locate the individual responsible.

At this point in the investigation, police believe Richards had an association with the suspect.

Police report the incident does not appear to be random in nature.
