RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City Police have made an arrest in what is now the fatal shooting of a juvenile Friday morning.
According to RCPD Support Services Captain Scott Sitts, around 9:30 a.m., police were called to a residence near the intersection of North Maple Avenue and Surfwood Drive in response to a report that a juvenile female had been shot.
Upon arrival, police located the juvenile, who was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The female, identified as 16-year-old McKenzie Garreaux, died of her injuries late Friday afternoon.
Sitts say they identified a suspect in the case and he was taken into custody without incident a couple of hours later.
The suspect was identified as 19-year-old Nathanial Grey Eagle of Rapid City.
Sitts emphasized that the area where the shooting took place has seen a high number of gun-related incidents.
Schools in the north part of Rapid City were placed on secure status following the shooting and during the time the search for a suspect was being conducted.
The investigation into the shooting is still ongoing and charges are now pending in the case.
