RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City law enforcement say they have surpassed last year’s record for homicides.
Police say there have been 13 homicides in Rapid City this year. That surpasses last year’s record of 12.
Rapid City Police Captain James Johns says drugs and guns are at the forefront of violent crime.
“The reality is, if you’re hanging around drug dealers and you’re hanging around people that do drugs and do bad things, you’re likely to get hurt, but if you lead a good life and aren’t messed up in the drug world or the gang world, odds are you’re not going to be the victim of a violent crime.”
Police believe drugs are a factor in the latest shootings that resulted in two deaths this past weekend.
Police say the public can help them by reporting suspicious activity or providing them with any information they may have on any current homicides.
They say a phone call or a text message could prevent a future crime.
