Rapid City police seeing increase in vehicle, firearm thefts

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City police say at least five vehicles and seven firearms were stolen after a surge of vehicle thefts over the weekend.

Police spokesman Brendyn Medina says several of the incidents involved out of town residents staying at hotels – likely in town for the Black Hills Stock Show.

Medina says of all the vehicles reported as stolen over the weekend, the keys were left in the vehicles.

He says vehicle burglaries are difficult to investigate but simple to prevent by locking doors. He also warns not to leave firearms inside unlocked vehicles.
